The "Blooming City" project is a sales center that spans 1450 square meters. It is characterized by its unique use of materials and its incorporation of traditional Lingnan architectural elements. The design's unique properties lie in its innovative use of materials and its fusion of Chinese and Western aesthetics. Instead of traditional wood and glass, Yaw used metal and acrylic to create the Manchurian flower-window screen, a key feature of the design.
Yaw's design process involved a careful study of Lingnan architectural culture and its unique characteristics. The design reflects the region's "inside sealing and exterior opening" architectural style, which is a result of its coastal mountainous location. The negotiation area of the design embodies this ancient architectural concept, demonstrating a balance between self-consistency and external tolerance.
The design's realization involved the use of various materials including artistic paint, environment-friendly coiled material with texture, wood veneer, artificial stone, stainless steel, artistic glass, and brick. The project started in October 2021 in Guangzhou and was completed in July 2022.
One of the main challenges of the project was the creation of the IP design "Zhuzai". This was created with the concept of "taking water and thinking of source" to add cultural interest. The designer created a straightforward, approachable graphic that, when combined with traditional tea art actions, presents Guangdong tea culture in a fresh, modern way.
The design also features a recreation space, the center of gravity of which is formed by the LED screen, stairs, water bar, and tea area. Each component is joined together by distinctive Guangdong cultural features, which not only replicate the traditional aesthetic form of the Guangdong school but also carry over the memory temperature of the old Guangdong.
In conclusion, Rey Yaw's "Blooming City" is a testament to the power of design to merge tradition and modernity. The project is a unique blend of Lingnan architectural culture and contemporary design techniques, resulting in a space that is both culturally rich and aesthetically pleasing. The design's success is evidenced by its Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023, a prestigious accolade that recognizes outstanding expertise and innovation in design.
